"Ed Asks...will you march with me?"

Lets all join together and march as "ONE NATION" on Washington October 2nd

ONE NATION WORKING TOGETHER

Our nation stands at a critical crossroads. The 30-year drive for a low-wage, high-consumption society that imports more and more of what it consumes has hit the wall.

Millions are unemployed, with little recovery in sight. A record number of Americans who want desperately to work have been jobless for more than 6 months.

At the same time, Wall Street continues to roll up big profits. Banks and corporations have made off with trillions of public dollars, while small businesses can't get loans and cities are being forced to make cuts to public education and public safety, harming our children and our communities.

Obstructionists in Congress are doing everything they can to stop anything that helps working people, and they are scapegoating workers for the demise of the economy. Public sector workers are being cast as selfish, auto workers are being blamed for the troubles of the auto industry, and teachers are being blamed for an education system in need of support.

Working people are frustrated and angry-incensed by the government's inability to halt massive job loss and declining living standards on the one hand, and the comparative ease with which Republicans in Congress, with help from some Democrats, have done their best to make the world safe again for JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and CitiGroup, on the other.

Just as we have seen through history, fear mongers in our country have seized on that anger and are working hard -- unfortunately with some success--to use justifiable anger about a failing economy to divide us.

We have to fight this hateful demagoguery that only benefits our foes, and we can't do it alone. History has taught us that the best way to fight the forces of hatred is to address the economic policies that led to our economic suffering, and that our fight must draw its strength from an alliance of the poor and the middle class-everyone who works for a living.

It is against this backdrop that we join ONE NATION.

ONE NATION is a multi-racial, civil and human rights movement whose mission is to reorder our nation's priorities to invest in our nation's most valuable resource - our people.

The organizations that have come together to form ONE NATION believe that our goal should be a future of shared prosperity, not stubborn unemployment and a lost generation. Workers should be able to share in the wealth they create, and everyone deserves the opportunity to achieve the American Dream - a secure job; the chance for our children to get a great public education and the opportunity to make their own way in the world; and laws that protect us, not oppress us.

ONE NATION is a long-term effort to reverse the dangerous economic course of our country over the past four decades. It brings together organizations from across the progressive spectrum-labor, civil rights, environmental, faith and many others-recognizing that none of us alone have been able to achieve our priorities, whether they are large-scale job creation, labor law reform, immigration reform, investing in public education or other concerns, and that we will not realize change until these priorities belong to all of us.

ONE NATION shares the labor movement's policy agenda: An economy that works for all; good jobs, fair jobs, safe jobs, and more jobs; reforming Wall Street; repairing our immigration system; quality education for every child; and ensuring that everyone in America has the opportunity to contribute to and strengthen our country. Restoring workers' rights to organize and bargain collectively is at the heart of the policy agenda.

The ONE NATION march on Washington on October 2, 2010 will charge up an army of tens of thousands of activists who will return to their neighborhoods, churches, schools and, especially, voting booths, with new energy to enact our common agenda. And on the same day, the labor movement will walk door-to-door in targeted states around the country, bringing the same message to union members exactly one month before the fall elections.

The march aims to bring working people, young people, retirees, civil rights activists and many others together on the Mall to show the obstructionists in Congress that we are many and diverse, strong and that united-and we will fight together for the American Dream.

Many of our unions are already committed to work as a part of ONE NATION. The unions of the AFL-CIO proudly join this coalition and pledge to work collectively to add our support to this great effort.

Working people can make a difference when we rely on ourselves and act collectively. We are America. And together we can make our voices heard.

Hey Ed-

Just discovered your program this evening. It was posted on the page of a facebook group I'm a member of called "Support the Unemployed with your voices and votes" . It is one of a number of groups that is attempting to organize and take action on this issue of unextended UI benefits by contacting our Senators, Reps, The President, etc. We appreciate that you are not forgetting these millions of people who too many in power seem happy to not only leave out in the cold, but act as if our misfortune is of our own making.

Feel free to look up the above group, "Unemployment Benefits vs Congress", "Middle Class Americans", "Extend Unemployment or create some more jobs already!!! This is old already" and others on fb and give us an opportunity to bring our "cause" to more of the American public, especially since this is a problem that will only continue to grow unless, in addition to the extension of the UI benefits, some real action towards jobs creation is taken.

Thanks again for not ignoring this huge issue.

Ed Schultz - I greatly admire you and agree with your political analysis, but I feel that you are missing the main point. Basing our economy on consumerism/materialism is as unsustainable as basing it on oil and capitalism. We have to create jobs in sectors other than manufacturing and promote values other than material consumption of goods. How about paying people to do these important jobs: being "cultural creatives" to envision and demonstrate sustainable life styles, teaching, alternative education, caring for the very young and the very old, creating art and music, caring for the natural world, promoting universal spiritual values of compassion and social justice. Our country now punishes those who are drawn to these worthwhile activities but not paying them enough to sustain themselves. Our country is on the wrong path in valuing the consumption of material goods over caring about people, beauty, and nature. Please speak to this.

Hey Ed,

You often talk about helping those who are unemployed. (daily as a matter of fact) I have yet to hear you mention the fact that the libs are causing 10s of thousands of american people to lose their jobs. The fact is all along the Gulf coast people will lose there jobs because of this ban. This is a crime that one company did something wrong, now we all have to suffer. These rigs WILL go where they can work, and they sign contracts for years at a time. The difference between what you talk about and what im talking about is we have work here that will help the whole country, and the left is killing our jobs. That is a fact, it cant be disputed. Lift the ban. You want to help 10s of thousands of americans? Get on your show and talk about how this president and the Dems are putting hard working people out of work by the thousands. If you can talk about people that have been out of work for months you can talk about workers that are being forced out of work by the goverment. Other wise sit down and shut up.

Dear Ed -

First and foremost, THANK YOU for continuing to fight and keep elevating the visibility of those of us who are unemployed and who may not be receiving benefits.

After 33+ years in the U.S. workforce, I have been out of work for going on 16 months.

The unemployment rate is our county ROSE last month to 11.8%.

My UI payment was $208.00 week (which is the maximum) in the State Of Arizona.

I am humbly grateful for that benefit when receiving it.
I believe that most of us (unemployed) have lost what little faith and confidence we may have had or could muster in our elected officials PERIOD.

We see political and quite frankly, childish and partisan politics be the priority over the welfare of U.S. Citizens.

I find it ironic that Andrea Mitchell yesterday (07/12/10)was touting that over 1 million people in Haiti are still without aid (which in itself is also a TRUE tragedy) and we (our United States) have approximately the same (at least for this week) number of citizens who are without UI benefits due to senatorial bickering and grandstanding.

How demoralizing it is to realize and have to accept that you and your families livelihood and basic sustainence is not a priority to our elected officials.

I find it cruel, ruthless and heartless that Harry Reid allowed the Senate to adjourn for the 4th of July vacation with no apparent concern for those who are in need of the Senate's help and support.

Further, I am questioning the leadership of our President and Vice-President when they idly sat by and allowed the vacation to occur but then, their paychecks haven't stopped.

It is truely a SAD, SAD day in these United States when our elected officials whose salaries are paid with taxes of hard working Americans turn their backs on those in such desperate need.

I believe it could be only poetic justic for those who are up for re-election later this years to lose and become unempoyed, to have them walk (as they won't be able to afford fuel for their vehicles) and knock on my door to ask for assistant.

I would graciously answer and them close door in their face just as they have done to me.

Hey Ed,

Thank you for your show. I LOVE IT. You are one of the few who tells it like it is, without fear.

This is class warfare, where the poor and middle class with those who advocate for then are despised. The all mighty dollar trumps morality, ethics, or social responsibility. The wealthy across party lines unite to protect their financial interest, not the needs of the American people.

We need to wake up, don't let the republicans exploit your fears to advance an agenda that will hurt our future.

Ed is always on point! For now and for the foreseeable future, manufacturing and agriculture (i.e., manufacturing produce, livestock, etc.) will necessarily be a primary part of the American economy. Otherwise, we get a society of people that want to manage the labor of others. That is the true definition of slavery or to put it biblically, not wanting to "eat bread by the sweat of YOUR face" , but by the sweat of someone else's "face". We can be "cultural creatives" and still embrace manufacturing, agriculture, etc. and we should.

I don't know any liberals that are causing any of the American people to lose their jobs and I don't think anyone else truthfully knows either! The "DEEP DRILLING OIL BAN" is necessary to understand the reasons behind the BP oil spill. The most accurate comparison is if there was a major accident on one of the nation's interstate highways, the emergency authorities would shut down the highway until the reason for the accident was determined and steps could be taken to allow traffic to proceed safely and normally. One person did something wrong to cause the accident and now many people traveling that highway will have to suffer. Once the accident is cleared and reasons behind it are understood, traffic proceeds again normally. If the shutdown didn't happen, many more people could be hurt. Keep the DEEP DRILLING OIL BAN ON until we can understand how to enact safety measures so that 11 more people won't be killed and more of our marine natural resources aren't destroyed! Vous vous asseyez et fermez vers le haut, comprenez!!!!

Some of the unemployed may have "lost what little faith and confidence they may have had or could muster in their elected officials PERIOD", but I tell you it would be a heck of a lot worse if republicans were trying to run the government. They tried for 12 years with Ronald Reagan and George H W Bush. Result: millions of people lost their pensions, banks and savings and loans failed and millions of people's children were killed in foreign wars. They tried for another 8 years with George W. Bush. Result: failed investment houses, banks, auto dealers and large companies (including stable utility companies!) and millions of people's children were killed in foreign wars. Is that what you want instead? I CANNOT SAY THIS LOUDLY ENOUGH: IF YOU WANT YOUR ECONOMY RUINED AND YOUR CHILDREN KILLED, ELECT A republican!!!!!! I urge you, especially older people nearing retirement - Vote, vote, vote!!! If you don't, you'll get the George W. Bush - George H W Bush - Ronald Reagan type of government AGAIN and this time, they'll make sure you CAN NEVER recover from loss of your pension, job, life savings, etc. and that the rest of your children will also be killed in foreign wars!!!!

Considering all the bad economic and poll news that continues to rain down on the Democrats, at least Jimmy Carter can take comfort in this: After Barak Obama, he will no longer be considered the worst American president since the Civil War.
