I am wondering where you found the info to suggest that the UnitedHealthcare CEO makes over $800,000/day. I could not verify that figure. At one point I heard $129 million per year for the total package, the but the numbers I found now are a lot lower.

Posted by Mark Perloe, Atlanta, GA

Welcome back, Ed!
We missed the voice of reason. Thanks for cutting through the garbage talk on health care reform. You know the first people who would complain if health care reform didn't pass are those people on the news today who are believing the lies!
Keep bringing the truth to the public!
Thanks again,
Ann

Posted by Ann Charland, Springfield, IL

I believe Ed got the info from Greenwald who was on the show; it included the CEO's stock holdings or options or something.
the fact that the avg CEO of the major insurance companies made $11.9 million per year from 2000 to 2007 is outrageous enough when you consider the rise in profits and bonuses in comparison to the denial of claims and fewer insured.

Posted by michael Hawaii

The information regarding CEO salaries are public information. Just attend a stock holders meeting and you will find out exactly much they make, daily.

Hey Ed have you seen this?

Ten Questions Politicians Won't Answer

While I have confidence in the American people to come up with their own probing questions, let me suggest a few questions that my own colleagues have been loath to answer:

1. Why do we need to increase spending on health care by at least $1.6 trillion and steal prosperity from our children and grandchildren when we spend nearly twice per person what other industrialized nations spend on health care?

In my view, any bill that increases spending is a failure and not serious reform. The problem is not that we don't spend enough on health care, but that we don't allocate resources efficiently and get value for what we pay.

2. What programs will you cut and whose taxes will you raise to pay for health-care reform?

Any politician - Republican or Democrat - who refuses to answer this question or avoids the topic by deferring to the committees of jurisdiction doesn't deserve to be in office.

3. What earmarks or pet projects that you have sponsored will you sacrifice to help finance the cost of health-care reform?

It is immoral, in my view, to ask taxpayers to make more sacrifices while politicians practice business-as-usual pork-barrel politics.

4. Will you vote for a public option that requires taxpayer-funded abortion?

The current version of the so-called reform bill requires taxpayer-funded abortion. In the House, this fact prompted 19 pro-life Democrats to send a letter of protest to Speaker Pelosi. In the Senate, an amendment by Barbara Mikulski (D., Md.) that would require taxpayer-funded abortion passed in committee. Sen. Bob Casey (D., Pa.) objected and voted no, saying, "The way it [the Mikulski amendment] is written could be interpreted down the road to include something like abortion." Are these Democrats also part of the right-wing scare-tactic conspiracy?

5. If the public option is so wonderful, will you lead by example and vote for a plan to enroll you and your family in the public option?

6. Will you vote for a plan that will allow a board of politicians and bureaucrats to override decisions made by you and your doctor?

Both the Senate and House bills set up a government-run "comparative effectiveness" board that will make final decisions about treatment and care. In committee, I gave senators several opportunities to accept language that would forbid this board from denying care. All of my amendments were rejected, which suggests that the intent is to set up a board that will ration care, as is done in the United Kingdom.

7. If you support a "comparative effectiveness" board, what qualifies you, as a politician, to practice medicine? Have you delivered health care to a single person, much less entire classes of people you claim to represent, such as the poor, the uninsured, or children?

I'm one of two physicians in the Senate, along with John Barrasso of Wyoming. I know for a fact that very few leaders in this debate have any firsthand experience or knowledge of health care, which is disturbing.

8. How will a government-run public option perform better than other failing government programs, such as Medicare, Medicaid, and Indian Health Care?

Forty percent of doctors refuse to accept Medicaid patients because the program is broken. Access to a government program - such as the public option - does not guarantee access to health care.

9. If increasing spending on health care was the solution, why hasn't it worked yet?

The public-option "reform" is not new at all but an extension of 1960s-era public policies that say a little more government spending and intervention is always the answer.

Who are the 50 million Americans (What is your definition of Americans) You never bring it up on your show what the total 50 million represents, yet you pound the republicans for using forceful tactics, I am democrat and I would like to know who are the 50 million; the plan I would vote for is make health ins. mandatory for everyone like car ins., this would bring down the cost.

Oh, you also haven't brought up anything in regards to the border issues on your show.

Its good to have you back.

Ed is an idiot.

Posted by Tahlia, Bev Hills, CA

ED. Dou you have any other US or State representatives that will admit to missing 104 votes but won't miss an oppurtunity to be on your show. Give me a break!!!!!

Posted by Mark, Brooklyn

10. Are you more committed to doing reform right or quickly? Would you consider backing a thoughtful alternative to the public option? If so, which one?

I've introduced a bill along with Sen. Richard Burr (R., N.C.) and Reps. Paul Ryan (R., Wisc.) and Devin Nunes (R., Calif.) called the Patient's Choice Act that guarantees coverage and choice for every American without raising taxes or increasing spending. In fact, our bill will save taxpayers at least $70 billion. Many other members of Congress, both Republicans and Democrats, are working on alternatives that don't herd the American people into a government-run program.

The choice is not between the public option and nothing. The choice is between the public option and an option that can win the support of the public. The future of health care truly is up to you.

Posted by Mark, Brooklyn

Why is it that politicians and commentators can make outrageous claims about health reform and not be told to show the people where (in the 1000 pg bill) it is that they got their facts from? I think it is irresponsible for the media to let these politicians and commentators say something and RUN...the longer they are allowed to get away with this the longer Americans are going to have to deal with misinformation and lies. It is unbelieveable to me that CSI and other made for TV movies have to show a disclaimer that their shows are based on reality but not entirely so and news programs like Glenn Beck and O' Reilly are not made to do the same since many statements they make are not based completely on fact?

Critics of President Obama's health care reform need to realize some concepts that are irrefutable and that they do not want to believe: our current employer based health care system is on a financial trajectory to implode like the Soviet Union imploded at the end of the Cold War. This analogy is a good one. The Soviet Union finally collapsed because of declining oil revenues from exports caused by Saudi Arabia's decision to increase oil production in the mid 1980's despite what conservatives say about Reagan's increased defense spending on Star Wars etc. The American health care system is on its way to collapsing because small businesses are no longer able to provide affordable health insurance to their employees. This is the root cause of the cost shifting that causes premiums to increase at double digit rates for those who have health insurance. Universal coverage will arrest this cost shifting trends and prices for health care can start to stabilize. The GOP loves to point out that small businesses are the engine of our economy providing the vast majority of new jobs in our economy. About two-thirds of small businesses in America offered health insurance in the early 1990's now in 2009 we have only about one-third of small businesses offering health insurance to employees presently. The pool of small businesses offering health care will rapidly decrease in the future. The average American family spends about $12,000 per year on health insurance and in ten years it could well be $25,000 per family. This means that the majority of American families with a median income of around $50,000 will be spending over ONE-HALF of their income on health insurance premiums more than on their mortgages. If you like ship of state analogies the American employer based health insurance ship the "Lusitania" has been torpedoed by unsustainable cost increases. The Republicans are rearranging deck furniture while the water is coming over the bulk heads of the ship. What they need to do is head to the lifeboats and those lifeboats are health insurance reform with universal coverage with a strong public option followed by federal anti-trust litigation to break up and regulate huge corporate insurance monopolies. We are facing a legitimate emergency that threatens bankruptcy for many millions of individuals and chronic structural budget deficits for federal, state, and local governments across America without substantial health care reform. Much of the severe financial problems in California and other big states are caused by the uncontrolled cost increases of health care that are structural and outside changes in the business cycle. These states budget problems with health care will not end when the private economy picks up steam. California's budget crisis has become nearly every state's budget crisis. These fiscal problems will be greatly exacerbated by political vacillation causing huge cuts in necessary services like police, fire, and education and abrupt tax increases at all levels of government. Health insurance reform with a strong public option leading to universal coverage is the only way to have stability in federal, state, and local budgets and keep stable tax rates for all Americans.

The next concept to digest is that when health care reform is a long continuing ongoing process of votes NOT JUST A SINGLE VOTE THIS FALL. We will have to find our way on health care reform because our system is one sixth of the national economy. This reform process is only beginning and one reform vote is not an end in itself. There will be a process of special commission revues, continuing committee hearings in both houses of Congress, and the beginning of real tough votes on popular programs like Medicare and Medicaid that are facing fiscal insolvency in the coming decade. This in large part due to 78 million retiring baby boomers seeking more health care services. There are going to be some tough hard decisions coming up soon for all Americans. We need to repeal the Bush tax cuts. We need to pull the troops rapidly out of Iraq and later on from Afghanistan because we do not have the resources for multi-trillion dollar wars and nation building. We have to change the way we think about wars and security from top to bottom. There will continue to be large cuts in the defense budget and other areas of government expenditure popular with politicians in both parties. Then taxes for all Americans are going to have to go up. This includes energy taxes, taxes on the upper class need to be charged a surcharge on incomes above $500K per year. We can not maintain our infrastructure, health care system, and other essential functions of government like national defense without increased revenues to the federal treasury. We are going to be spending about 25% of our GDP in coming years maybe more but we collect only around 20% GDP for government revenues. This gap is totally unsustainable in the long term. We are at one of those critical junctures in our history where decisions made now or more critically FAILURE TO MAKE THOSE DECISIONS will impact our future more than at times in the past. If we fail to make the hard choices to balance our budgets economic growth will be severely retarded in future years in America. We can then safely assume the 21st century will be an Asian century not an American one. This is why President Obama is correct in wanting substantial health care reform accomplished this year because it is a national security issue of the highest order for our children's economic future.

This isnt about healthcare, it's about the very survival of the GOP, who are NOT in good shape! To accomplish this, they believe the end justify the means, up to and including sending out armies of brown shirt types who will lie and disrupt and shut down meetings so that the real truth wont come out. There IS no socialism, there IS no death committee, there IS no euthanasia, there IS no loss of meidcare benefits, there IS no forced choice and there IS no dropping of coverage. Those are ALL lies perpetrated by the GOP and their minions. Finally, I find it absolutely HYSTERICAL that the GOP and supporters are braying about costs! With their history since reagan, since WHEN has the GOP worried about deficits and debt????? NEVER!! "Deficits dont matter" Dick Cheney!

Your a democrat like me but lets be truthful; how come on when you asked critics about these town hall meetings you never asked anyone from the other side about their opinion. so its looks so bias. Thats bad

Is this is not a right or left issue; its about do we need a reform; but how we do it;

When are going to talk about jobs being outsourced in America; Secure boarders, why cant we tax things that are made international but lower the costs on America product lines.

Glad your back

It's alsways been a bystery to me why health care "reform would cost more money. We already spend more money total and a greater percentage of our GDP than any other country. I'm all in favor of paying for health care overtly rather than covertly. Right now, I pay in increased insurance costs because they are inflated to pay for those who don't have coverage but get care anyway; I pay in the ever increasing copay that my employer has instituted over the last fifteen years; I pay in the increased deductiable that has been implemented of the last 15 years, and I'm pay in the difference between what my insurance pays and what the charges are. I we were more honest about how things were paid for we might be better able to make more rational decision.

Joe in Brooklyn: I want to know what you right wingers are going to do about health care policy besides obstructionist politics. You are using classical bait and switch tactics because you do not have any solutions for nearly 50 million Americans who have no medical insurance. Health insurance companies contribute huge amounts of money so that the Republicans can run for reelection. Where is your plan Joe to get health insurance coverage to the 50 million uninsured? Why have the Republicans failed to do a single damned thing for the last eight years to cover Americans with health insurance. Republicans are too busy being bought off by Big Pharma, HMO's, and the health insurance corporations to have a conscience about the 20,000 Americans who die because corporate bureaucrats ration their health care. Maybe someone on your block or community is going bankrupt because of medical bills? Where are your solutions to real problems Joe? All you right wingers do is bitch and complain about President Obama but when it comes to policy solutions you conservatives have had a frontal lobotomy.

President Obama's birth certificate has been produced online and investigated by journalists many times. The county official in Hawaii has authenticated his birth certificate as official and legal on numerous different occasions. Local newspapers in Hawaii with the listing of live births from the local hospitals printed in 1961 have listed Barrack Obama has being born in Hawaii in 1961. The problem is Joe is that right wingers like you just can not stand an African-American in the White House who is smarter than you are. Keep this up and the GOP is going to get its ass handed too it in the 2010 elections.

Posted by Rex, Moorhead

IF THE GOOD LORD HIMSELF APPEARED TO CERTIFY BARACK OBAMA'S BIRTH CERTIFICATE, AS DOZENS OF JOURNALISTS AND PUBLIC OFFICIALS ALREADY HAVE DONE, HE WOULD BE DENIED AS PETER DENIED HIM, AND DOUBTED AS PETER DOUBTED HIM. GET OVER THE FACT THAT A U.S. BORN MAN OF MIXED RACE WON THE PRESIDENCY. IT HAPPENED. HAWAII IS A REAL STATE, AFTER ALL.

Posted by TONI BAUER, KENT, WA.

i've lived in hawaii for 19 years' i know punahou school where obama went to school. Punahou is one of the best private school in the entire school system of the USA. One of my grandchildren is hawaii born and has the same birth certificate as obama has. so is she not a us citizen either. there is a lot of ignorant people living in these united states and prejudice is rampant----------aloha
