Tim Murphy and Andy Kroll of Mother Jones have an interesting story from Rick Santorum's 1994 Senate Campaign. According to transcripts of town hall meetings, Rick Santorum spent considerable time rallying against the societal ills of single motherhood.
"We are seeing it. We are seeing the fabric of this country fall apart, and it's falling apart because of single moms," Santorum said during a Clairton, PA town hall. Santorum's comments came as part of an anti-welfare platform.
One month later at another campaign appearance, Santorum took it a step further. "What we have is moms raising children in single-parent households simply breeding more criminals."
Santorum described his political views as 'moderate' at the time.
What a dumb thing to say, they just keep going more and more hard right,
THE ONLY GOOD REPUBLICAN IS A STIFF REPUBLICAN!

Lee you are spot on. I don't know the percentages, but there are many single parents who divorced to get out of abusive relationships. There are also single mothers raising children because their spouse died.
This is another point. Rick Santorum is against a woman having an abortion, even in the case of rape. Is he against the mother raising that child as a single mother because she is breeding a future criminal???? He made the statement as if it should be illegal to raise a child as a single parent.

I posted about this earlier today on the Newt Gingrich thread so I won't repeat all of it here. Glenn Grothmann, a Wisconsin state Senator has actually introduced a bill to make single parenting child abuse, this was on the talk shows last night while the election was on everything else.
He is a 56 year old single man who has never been married or had children.
Please google Milwaukee Archdiocese Bankruptcy and read the latest about child abuse in Wisconsin. They are going after the wrong people.
Dan Quayle tried this crap back when he ran with George Bush Sr. A bunch of washed up dried up fools with no new ideas.

What an incredibly simplistic way to view the world. My mom raised me alone after my dad died. My best friend's mom raised three kids by herself after discovering one of them was being abused by her (now) former husband. Is Ricky suggesting that remaining in that abusive environment would have been a better alternative? BTW, my friend and I each have graduate degrees and no criminal record.

Santorum has a wife and at least one daughter or perhaps more daughters I don't know for sure. You would think that the man would simply support family planning and birth control out of the love for the women in his own life. People who do not have empathy for the basic health care needs of women are not being very smart. Treating women like doormats is not the way for America to create jobs to compete against China, India, and Brazil in a hyper-competitive interdependent global economy of the 21st century. It is a prescription to bring America back into the 19th century.
If you want to increase the marriage rate in America you have to increase spending on public education, infrastructure, and green energy programs. A Medicare for all public option also must be passed to give all Americans universal access to health care. This lays the foundation for job creation in our economy upon which marriages can start. If young people are going to have few job opportunities then they will just live together and forget about marriage or even having children. So the problem of single parents are a problem caused by a lack of job creation combined with stagnant middle class incomes. If you against single parented family and support traditional marriage like I do, then you need to understand that you must have a growing economy that produces good paying jobs with benefits. If you are pro-marriage, then you must be in favor of adequate funding for infrastructure, green energy, public education and higher education, plus a Medicare for all public option. Failure to connect all these public policy dots means more single parented families and more poverty for Americans.

@ Radical Rick: Unbelievably sick, disgusting, despicable & heartless thing to say: "What we have is moms raising children in single-parent households simply breeding more criminals."
How many children have grown up with a single mother or parent because of the 2 Wars going on right now when they lose their father of mother? Is Radical Rick Santorum going to accuse those children of being our future criminals.................well he just did!!!!!

If that's the case, wouldn't readily available contraception be part of the solution? You can't have it all Ricky boy. This guy has serious issues with women.

Santorum is a male chauvinist pig. He probably believes he is god-like because he saved his wife from the abortion doctor. Just watch his wife standing on stage with him she is yielding to his power, control and authority. This man is living in a fool's paradise. Where is his proof that single mother are delivering criminals? This is all Santorum has...pick on women.....
